Staying healthy involves a complex balance of hormones, vitamins, blood chemistry, immunology, neurology, and genetics. When any of these elements are out of harmony, we experience disease or pain. A recent paper from Mission Viejo, California looked at one tiny dimension of this connection by studying the blood serum concentrations of vitamin D in pain patients who were getting care at an acute rehabilitation center.
The researchers took blood samples from 414 patients and assessed each of them for general musculoskeletal pain. The study found that people reporting musculoskeletal pain had substantially lower levels of vitamin D.
